What Does Acupuncture Actually Feel Like?
If the word "needles" makes you nervous, you're not alone; its the major concern for most patients. Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. They're ultra-thin, about the width of a human hair, and most people are genuinely surprised by how little they feel. During a session, you may notice different sensations, a dull ache, gentle warmth, heaviness, or “movement”. That sensation (called "de qi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is actually a sign that the point is activated and working. Many people find it deeply relaxing, and it's not uncommon to drift to sleep while on the table. After your session, most patients leave feeling calm, grounded, and lighter. Some notice relief right away; for others, the full effect builds over the following day or two. Everyone's experience is a little different, and we are always updating your treatment plan to give the best care possible.

How Many Acupuncture Sessions Do You Need?
How often do you go to your primary care doctor and walk out “cured” of your issue? Almost never, and its not because they aren’t great at their jobs. Just like them, your acupuncturist offers ongoing care. You treatment plan will be evaluated at your initial visit. Time since onset, seasonal flare up patterns, severity, and your response all factor into the treatment plan.
As a general guide we recommend 4 sessions to begin with most cases. For more severe or chronic cases we may begin with an 8 week treatment course.
• Acute concerns may resolve quickly, and be managed with flare ups or reinjury.
• Chronic conditions (long-standing pain, hormonal imbalances, ongoing anxiety) typically respond best with a more frequent primary treatments, then shift to a secondary maintenance treatment phase.
• Maintenance and wellness visits are popular for patients who want to stay ahead of stress, support their immune system, or simply feel their best — these are often recommended seasonally! At your first visit, we'll talk through your health history and health goals and give you a personalized recommendation.

Do You Accept Insurance?
We are currently a cash-pay practice, while we wait for credentialing from regional insurers. If you do have acupuncture coverage we are happy to offer you a superbill that you can resubmit yourself to the insurance company. Additionally, if approved by your plan, you may use FSA or HSA dollars to pay for your acupuncture services.

TCM vs. Western Medicine: Can They Work Together?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine come from very different frameworks, but they are not total opposites. Our philosophy at Whitmere Wellness is that they can compliment one another.
Western medicine excels at diagnosis, emergency care, and treating acute conditions. TCM, which includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other modalities, takes a broader view of the body. Looking at patterns, imbalances, and the relationship between physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Western medicine looks for a diagnosis to combat, TCM finds ways to restore the body to balance.
Many of our patients come to us alongside care from their OB-GYN, physical therapist, therapist, or primary care physician. We welcome that. We're always happy to coordinate with your other providers when it's helpful, and we believe your best way to heal is by having a supportive team in your corner.
